Care and Cleaning for Outdoor Address Signs

Clean stainless steel, aluminum, acrylic, and rusted metal house number signs safely. Simple outdoor care tips for US, CA, and AU weather.

Outdoor address plaques live in sun, rain, coastal air, and seasonal freeze–thaw. Simple care keeps stainless steel, solid aluminum, acrylic, and rusted metal house numbers looking intentional for years. These tips apply to Grotrevleg custom signs used on US, Canadian, and Australian homes.

General cleaning

  • Rinse with fresh water to remove dust and salt spray.
  • Wash with a soft cloth or sponge and mild dish soap.
  • Rinse again and dry with a clean microfiber cloth to limit water spots.
  • Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, bleach, and harsh solvents that can scratch coatings or acrylic.

304 stainless steel

Stainless house numbers and stainless address plaques benefit from occasional wiping after coastal storms. Fingerprints polish off with a soft cloth. If light surface spots appear, use a non-abrasive stainless cleaner sparingly, then rinse. Do not grind through powder coat edges.

Solid aluminum

10mm solid aluminum plaques have a protective clear coat over textured and antique-colored details. Clean gently; avoid metal polish that can dull aged finishes. Hand-aged variation is normal—cleaning should remove dirt, not force a factory-uniform color.

Acrylic

Acrylic house number signs scratch more easily than metal. Use only soft cloths and mild soap. Skip ammonia glass cleaners and dry abrasive towels. Floating mounts create a slight gap—clear cobwebs carefully without prying the plaque.

Rusted metal

Rusted metal house numbers are meant to look weathered. Surface tone will continue to evolve outdoors. Light rinsing is enough for most homes. Do not wire-brush or acid-wash unless you intentionally want a brighter raw look. Expect runoff staining on light paint if water streams off the plaque—plan placement accordingly.

Illuminated signs

For LED and RGB plaques, clean the stainless face the same way as other stainless signs, keep power adapters dry, and see the installation notes before opening lighting housings. Compare materials overall in our materials guide.
